...it'd be Gary Ferrell Pinot Noir. If you were ever to drink wine with my dad, I'd bet you $20 that he'd say, "This is good, but have you ever had Gary Ferrell?" According to my parents, this wine is impossible to find. They can't ever get their hands on it in Houston, and I think my dad is able to track down one bottle a year in New Jersey. So imagine my surprise when I popped into Midtown Wines Monday afternoon to see if they on the off chance had some and a call to their distributor yielded two bottles. When I went in today to pick them up, I had the following amazing conversation with one of the employees...
Me: Do you know why this is so hard to find? Is it small batches or just weird state laws?
Employee: They focus on super small batches, and that's why it is so good.
Me: How many bottles a year does your distributor get?
Employee: I'm not at liberty to say.
Me: ....blank stare.... Well do you think if I wanted another bottle six months from now it'd be hard to get?
Employee: Well we have a special relationship with our distributor, so if anyone can get it, it will be us. I'm not saying don't shop anywhere else, but I should be able to get it for you and no one else can.
I'm not at liberty to say?! Apparently Gary Ferrell = Tony Soprano.
